Clayton County Register, Thur., 31 May 1934.
Guttenberg: Mathias Burr, life-long, highly-regarded resident of this community, passed away at his home here on Sunday evening at 6:30 o'clock, at the age of 72 years, two months and ten days, following a several months illness. Mr. Burr was born on a farm in Jefferson township, Clayton county, Iowa, on March 17, 1862, where his boyhood days were spent. When a young man he served an apprenticeship in learning the carpenter trade, which occupation he successfully followed for a number of years. Later he was successfully engaged in farming and the dairy business for many years, after which he retired and spent the remainder of his life in Guttenberg. He was married at Guttenberg to Miss Mary Nieland 40 years ago. During his illness he was a patient sufferer and had hopes of recovery until the Angel of Death called him to the Great Beyond.
Mr. Burr was a man of a pleasing personality, and his greatest pleasure in life at all times was to do acts of kindness for his family and friends. To know him was to like and respect him. All that medical knowledge could suggest and loving hands could do, was done for him to save his life, but all to no avail. Mr. Burr's death is deeply mourned by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. George Heck, of near Garnavillo; Miss Eleanor Burr, and Mrs. Raymond Frommelt. of Guttenberg; seven grandchildren; one brother, Frank Burr, of Jefferson township; three sisters, Mrs. John Stamm, Miss Fannie Burr, and Mrs. Adolph Meyer, of Guttenberg, and numerous other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church in Guttenberg, Wednesday morning, with burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery. The funeral was very largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near.
