Clayton County Register, Thur., 10 May 1934.

Ed. Hofer, a life-long resident of Boardman township died at his home here in Elkader on Sunday, May 6th, after a short illness, at the age of 72 years, seven months and 23 days.

Mr. Hofer was born in this township on September 13, 1861, the son of Adam and Walburga Hofer. All his school education was obtained in the rural schools of this township, but he was a great reader and enriched his meagre school education by this method and from that great teacher, experience.

April 30th, 1884, he was united in marriage with Mary Toutsel, and to this union five daughters were born, the oldest preceding her father in death as a child. Those surviving, besides the deeply bereaved widow are: Josephine, at home; Mrs. D. L. Barton, Elkader; Mrs. L. G. Hibbard, Lombard, Ill., and Mrs. E. F. bear, Shannon, Ill. A brother-in-law, Henry Toutsch, who was as close as any brother could be and who has made his home with the Hofer family, also mourns.

In the early years Mr. Hofer served this community as a cattle buyer and in that capacity he made a large acquaintance among the farmers who remained his friends through his entire life even after he had retired from active buying. His honesty and integrity in his dealings will never be forgotten.

He was one of the most active in securing the erection of the present St. Joseph's church being one of the main solicitors of funds for that purpose and he remained active in the business affairs of his church to the time of his death. He was a charter member of the local council of the Knights of Columbus and that organization, as a final tribute to his memory, attended the funeral in a body.

Mr. Hofer, who was a home-loving man and an unusual neighbor, combined those attributes with a community spirit as well. He shirked no task assigned to him be it by a neighbor, his church, his community or his family and it can be said to his credit that he undertook no task which he did not successfully complete. While he will be missed most by his family his loss to the church and the community is a heavy one.

Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church here Tuesday morning and Interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery with the Rev. J. P. Taken officiating at the High Requiem Mass.

A memory, which will always be one of the pleasures for the Hofer family, is the fact that Mr. ad Mrs. Hofer, members of the family and friends were permitted to celebrate the Golden wedding anniversary on Monday, April 30th.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Hibbard and son, Lombard, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. E. Bear and children, Shannon, Ill.; Mrs. Aspinwall, Freeport, Ill.; John Fehr, Frank Dole and Mrs. Rudy, of Lena, Ill.; Mrs. F. N. Schroeder and son, Mathilda Heles, Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hofer and Wm. Hofer Jr., Clear Lake; Addie Hofer, Mrs. Wm. Fritz and daughter, Otto Hartman, Wm.. Alitz, Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kaber, Prairie du Chien; and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Toutsch of Fayette.
