ELKPORT: John Schnack, son of Delef Schnack and his wife Catherine, nee Kruse, was born in Clinton county, Iowa, January 8, 1869. In Infancy he was received into fellowship of God through holy baptism through his pastor at Andrew, Iowa. After being duly instructed and at the proper age, he renewed his baptismal vow and was received into the church through confirmation, which was ministered unto him in the Immanuel's Lutheran church at Elkport. In the year 1894, September 27th, he was united in holy wedlock to Miss Augusta Rath in the church where he was confirmed. To this union six children were born, two preceding the father in death.
The deceased was a man of sterling qualities and all who came in contact with him speak highly of his character. Many were the days of joy intermingled with grief and sorrow, which he and his faithful helpmate here, ever looking forward to better days. In his last illness the deceased never complained. At times it seemed as if he were improving, bringing hopes to the loved ones, but their hopes were shattered when the angel of death summoned his soul, returning it in safekeeping to the hands of his Creator and Provider. The deceased attained the age of 65 years, three months and 12 days.
In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves to mourn his passing, three sons and one daughter, Lester of Garber, Earl of Elkport, Virgil at home, Mrs. Doris Kirschbaum of Elkport; also four brothers: Henry of Prescott, Wis., William of East Moline, Ill., Fred of Alluwe, Okla., Herman of Dubuque; and one grandchild; and other relatives and a host of friends who mourn his passing, Friday morning at 6:30, April 20th.
Funeral services were from the home of the deceased, April 22, at 1:30 and at 2 p.m. at the Lutheran church of Elkport. Interment was made in Mt. Harmony cemetery, The Rev. F. E. Damm in charge.
The deceased was a member of the Town Council of Elkport for the past ten years, and was a honest and faithful servant and always did all he could for the betterment of his town. The funeral was largely attended. The bereaved family has the sympathy of hosts of friends in their sad affliction.
