DeWitt Clinton Hale died at his home in Elkader last Friday evening, March 16, after being confined to the house for many months, and to his bed for several weeks. He was born on November 29, 1857, in Conneault, Ohio. After the death of his father, William B. Hale, he came in 1866 with his mother, Mrs. Eliza Fobes Hale, who later married Oakley F. Davis, to his grandfather Fobes' farm near Elkader. While living there, at about the age of twelve, he fell from a tree and so injured his left arm that it had to be amputated. Facing life with this handicap, he graduated from the Elkader High School in 1875, in the first graduating class. Of the eight members of that class, Mr. Hale is the second to die. The Alumni Association of the school has collected a fund for a memorial to him. On December 25, 1888, he married Mary A. Stahl. About this time he bought the studio where he had been working for several years, and photography became his life work, a business which is now carried on by his daughter, Grace E. Hale. His son Ralph C. Hale, died in early manhood in 1913. Besides his wife and daughter he leaves two step-sisters, Mrs. Mattie J. Davis Shutter and Mrs. Hannah M. Davis Stearns, both of Billings, Mo. He was a member of the Woodman lodge and the Congregational church. In this curch he had served as deacon since 1922.

The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the home at 1:30 and at the Congregational church at two o'clock, with the Rev. C. T. Brewster officiating. Burial was made in the family lot in the East Side cemetery.
