Dr. Arthur A. Schmidt of Postville, a prominent physician and surgeon in Northeastern Iowa for many years, died Monday afternoon from a throat infection. It was his sixty-second birthday.
Dr. Schmidt, a native of Guttenberg, Iowa, was a graduate of St. John's university of St. Cloud, Minn., and the University of Iowa Medical school. He was married in 1895 to Ottilia Brandt, who survives with two daughters, Leila Schmidt of Postville and Dr. Joyce Schmidt, who has been associated with her father in the Postville hospital.
Following his graduation Dr. Schmidt practiced in Garnavillo for thirteen years, and in 1907, came to Postville. In 1909 he established the Postville hospital, the first in Allamakee county.
Dr. Schmidt was a former president of the Allamakee County Medical Association. At the time of his death he was health officer for Postville and medical officer for the C.R.I. and P. railroad.
The funeral will be held this afternoon at the Community Presbyterian church. The Rev. Marvin Brandt, pastor of the First Congregational church of Akron, Ohio, will be the officiating clergyman. Brandt is a brother of Mrs. Schmidt. He will be assisted by the Rev. R. F. Galloway of the Community Presbyterian church. Dr. Schmidt was a member of Brotherly Love lodge A.F. & A.M., and O.E.S. Burial will be in the Garnavillo cemetery.
