Clayton County Register, Thur., 25 Jan. 1934. Strawberry Point column.

Funeral services for Mrs. Katharine Baumgartner were held Monday afternoon at the St. Sebald church north of Strawberry Point. A nephew, Rev. John Baumgartner, of George, Iowa, preached the sermon in English, and Rev. E. R. Melchert, pastor of St. Sebald church, in German. Pall-bearers were grandsons: Carl and Paul Werger, Ted, Marvin, Werner and Geo. Schuchmann. Interment was made in the St. Sebald cemetery.

Mrs. Baumgartner, nee Katharine Weege, daughter of John and Anna Weege, was born Dec. 22, 1858, at St. Sebald. She was baptized soon after birth and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Her confirmation day was May 9, 1872, at St. Sebald church, the officiating pastor being Rev. John List.

On Mar. 29, 1883, she was united in holy wedlock with Frederick Baumgartner. This union was blessed with seven children, two sons and five daughters, Sophia and Julia dying in early childhood. This marriage was a very happy one. The young couple settled down on a farm at St. Sebald, at that time a place of virgin timber, and they were true pioneers. The place where they located is now known at the Otto Baumgartner farm. Hardship and care came a-plenty, but the keenest sorrow come to the departed one, when on Feb. 16, 1897, she lost her beloved husband through death. She was left with five small children, the youngest being only five months old. The sorrow and care and work were great for the poor widow, but she had a firm staff to lean on, as she was a very Christian woman and her faith was strong enough to uphold her always. Prayer and firm belief that it will be answered, sustained her and led her to a ripe old age.

She was a life-long member of the Lutheran church at St. Sebald. Let us all remember her as a true follower of Christ and follow her example. She was called by her Lord and Master from this vale of sorrow and tears last Friday, Jan. 12th, at the age of 75 years and 21 days. She is survived by two sons and three daughters: Otto Baumgartner and Arthur Baumgartner, Mrs. Emma Frederick, Mrs. Ida Schuchmann and Mrs. Hulda Weger, all in or near strawberry Point; twenty-nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and a large circle of friends.
