Clayton County Register, Thur., 01 Feb. 1934.
Garnavillo: Christ Thoma, prominent business man of Garnavillo, passed away at his home here Monday morning, at the age of 59 years, seven months and 20 days. Mr. Thoma had been in poor health for several years when death called him. He was born on a farm near Garnavillo, June 9, 1874, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Thoma, deceased, and his entire life was spent in this community. He grew to young manhood on the farm and received his education in the public schools of Garnavillo. On August 25, 1898, he was married to Miss Laura Tangeman of Garnavillo. Since 1910 and until his death he was successfully engaged in the mercantile business here. Previous to that time at various times he was engaged in teaming work, employed as clerk in the Meyer general store, and operated a meat market here successfully. In politics Mr. Thoma was a republican. He was a member of the Garnavillo town council at one time. Mr. Thoma affiliated with the Lutheran church, and was a progressive and popular citizen in every way. To know him was to like and respect him. His death is deeply mourned by his wife; two children, Willis Thoma and Mrs. Minerva Scharf, both of Garnavillo; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Rosina Schumacher and Mrs. Maria Tangeman of Garnavillo, and Mrs. Paulina Schroeder of Guttenberg, and many other relatives and friends, who will all sadly miss this good and true man.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. M. J. Harder at St. Paul's Lutheran church at Garnavillo this (Thursday) afternoon, with interment in the Garnavillo cemetery.
