At the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. P. Garcken, at Minneapolis, Minn., on Sunday, Dec. 17th, 1905, occurred the death of Abel W. Daugherty, in the 72nd year of his age. He was born at Spencer, Ohio, June 1, 1834, and came to Elkader in 1835. He was married to Hattie M. Cook in 1854, her death occurring in 1867. In 1870 he was married to Miss Jennie Stout, of Dubuque, who, with a daughter, Mrs. Otto Stein, of Chicago, survives him. Two sons by his second wife have preceded him in death.
Mr. Daugherty was engaged in business in Elkader for many years and was popular with all, his friends being a legion. He moved to Dubuque in 1875 and afterwards served that city as its mayor, and was a member of the General Assembly from Dubuque.
Deceased was an enthusiastic Mason, and served both as Master of Elkader Lodge No. 72, and as the first High Priest of Harmony Chapter, No. 41, of this place. He was also Grand High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons of Iowa. in 1877-9, and Grand Commander of the Knights Templar of Iowa in 1883-4. He had also attained to the 33rd degree of the Scottish Rites. At the funeral services at Minneapolis the Scottish Rite Masons officiated.
Mr. Daugherty's remains arrived here yesterday noon, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. F. Garcken, of Minneapolis, Mrs. Otto Stein, of Chicago, and Miss Emmer Cook, of Huron, S.D.
The members of Elkader lodge, under charge of Worshipful Master H. D. Brown, took charge of the remains of their departed brother and with the solemn service of the order consigned them to their last resting place beside those of his first wife, in our cemetery.
The following brothers served as pall bearers: J. J. Kauffman, R. M. Landon, S. V. Jack, H. W. Wilke, A. Kramer and D. G. Griffith.
