Elkader Register, Thur., 16 Nov. 1905. From an article describing the accident.
Monday morning a terrible accident happened when the boiler in the flouring mill exploded, killing Joel Baumgaertner, aged 30 years, the proprietor of the mill, and Ben Walter, the engineer, aged 25 years.
Mrs. Baumgaertner was at the mill and discovered that the steam gauge registered 150 pounds. She gave the alarm and ran from the mill toward the east, but had not gone far before the explosion occurred.
Both bodies were badly mutilated. Baumgaertner was disemboweled. The boiler and engine building was distributed over an acre of ground.
Mr. Baumgaertner came to Guttenberg from Minnesota, a few years since. He leaves a wife and two children.
(Note: See WPA and IGPP entries for Joel Baumgartner. He is buried in Guttenberg City cemetery.)
