Elkader Register, Thur., 16 Nov. 1905. From an article describing the accident.
Monday morning a terrible accident happened at Guttenberg. The boiler in the flouring mill exploded, killing Joel Baumgaertner, aged 30 years, the proprietor of the mill, and Ben Walter*, the engineer, aged 25 years.
Mrs. Baumgaertner was at the mill and discovered that the steam gauge registered 150 pounds. She gave an alarm and ran from the mill toward the east, but had not got far before the explosion occurred.
Both bodies were badly mutilated. but that of Walters was the worse, the top of his head having been blown off and the body so mangled it could hardly be recognized. The boiler and engine building was distributed over an acre of ground.
Mr. Walter was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Rud Walter, of Guttenberg. He leaves a wife and two children.

Note: surname was WOLTER, not Walter
