Henry Schurman died at the home here of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Barten, Saturday, Nov. 18, 1905, aged 76 years, 10 months and 16 days. Deceased's birthplace was Recklinghausen, Germany, where he was born Jan. 2, 1829. After reaching the required age he served time in the German army, and in 1855, when twenty-six years of age, emigrated to America, coming direct to Clayton county, Iowa. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted and served three years. His life in this county was spent on a farm a few miles from Guttenberg until about six years ago when his wife died and since then he has made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Barten. His death was due to the infirmities of old age and he passed away peacefully. The funeral was held at 1:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with interment in the City cemetery. Atty. Chas E. Scholz made a few appropriate remarks at the grave touching the life of the departed.
