Elkader Register, Thur., 05 Oct. 1905.

At the home of her son Albert in Cox Creek township, on Friday, sept. 29th, occurred the death of Mrs. Dorothea Smith. Dorothea Klehn was born Jan. 26, 1828, in Mecklenburg, Germany. She came to this county in 1850, and was married to her first husband, Mr. Greenwaldt, at Garnavillo. Mr. Greenwaldt died in 1860, and in 1861 she married Mr. John Smith* (see notes below), of Guttenberg. In the spring of 1864 they moved to Cox Creek twp., and settled on the home farm where she died. Mr. Smith departed this life in 187_ (looks like 1878 or 1879).

Six children were born to her, four by her first husband and two by Mr. Smith. Those living are Mrs. Fredericke Heiden, Mrs. Minnie Snedigar, Annie Greenwaldt and Albert Smith. Deceased had been in poor health the past few months but was not considered dangerous until the past three weeks.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the Congregational church at this place, Revs. Braun and G. W. Baxter, officiating. The services were largely attended by sympathizing friends of the departed.

Notes added by S. Ferrall 6/18/21:

The 1882 biography of Frederick Greenwaldt states he died in 1860 and his wife nee Dorathea Klien was remarried to John Schmidt, who died in 1879. John Schmidt's obit states he married Dorothea Klaehen or Klähen, widow of Friedrich Grünewald or Greenwaldt. Dorothea is buried in the East Side cemetery.
