Elkader Register, Thur., 15 June 1905.
Julia Robbins Chapman was born in Peterborough, New Hampshire, March 8th, 1807, and died at the old home farm near Volga City, June 7th, 1905, at the ripe old age of 98 years and 3 months. She leaves two sons and one daughter, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her loss.
She was well known among the older settlers of Clayton county as an energetic, helpful lady always ready to respond to the cry of every needy one, and among the younger class as one of the oldest people among the inhabitants of Volga.
She was married to Lewis M. Chapman in 1847, at Elgin, Ill., coming to this state in 1852 and settling on the farm on which she has since resided. Her husband preceded her to the grave nearly forty years. Many orphan children have her to thank for their care in childhood. She was always a great worker and it was her boast that she could see to thread her needle without glasses. She had a cancer on her great toe which caused her much pain for about one year, and during her last two or three weeks illness her sufferings were intense. But it was often remarked by her attendants that she bore her pain with great patience.
The funeral services were held at the house June 9th, 1905; Rev. Elwick, of the M.E. church, conducting them. The remains were interred in the Volga cemetery.
Her relatives wish to thank those who were so kind during her sickness and death.
