Elkader Register, Thur., 15 June 1905. Elkport and Vicinity column.
Charles Waltenbaugh, aged 23 years, was drowned in Turkey River Monday afternoon. It seems that the young man, who was subject to epileptic fits, went fishing Monday about one o'clock p.m. At about supper time he failed to get home, his brother-in-law, Joe Shadle, getting uneasy, went in search of him. When Mr. Shadle got to the mouth of Elk Creek he found Mr. Watenbaugh's fish poles and net. Mr. Shadle at once began to search for the body and found it in the river. The deceased was evidently taken with one of his spells and fell into the river. Coroner Beerman, of Guttenberg, was summoned and held an inquest. The remains were taken to Volga City for burial. This young man has only been a resident of our town for about three months but during that time he has shown himself to be an industrious, sober and hard working young man. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their sad affliction.
