Elkader Register, Thur., 25 May 1905. Strawberry Point column.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Opperman was saddened Sunday morning by the death of baby Vern. The little one, only a little over a year old, has been sick but a short time with cholera morbus, and although everything that medical skill and tender hands could do was done, still the disease steadily sapped his life's vitality until Sunday noon the Father above took him to be a jewel in his home. He was a sweet child, his tender loveliness having twined itself as heartstrings about the lives of the stricken father and mother. He was but a little ray of sunshine to brighten their paths, but only for a short time, and the many friends will join us in offering words of consolation full of sympathy. May the Father who took the precious sunbeam to Himself soften the grief of the heart broken parents whose first link in the family circle has been broken. The funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, Rev. J. F. Hestwoood officiating. The little white casket was covered with many beautiful flowers. The remains were laid to rest in the local cemetery.
