DIED - At his home near Garnavillo on Sunday, July 1, Christopher Daniel Fritz, at the age of 62 years 6 months.

Daniel Fritz was born in Saxe Meiningen, Germany, December 25, 1825. He left his home at the age of 15 years, and was apprenticed a masen [sic]. He traveled over many parts of Europe, and emigrated to this country in 1848, settling in New Bremen, Ohio, where a year later he married Maria Sievers, who survives him. In 1856 he removed with his family to Garnavillo, and has lived here ever since.

He served during the late war, being a member of Co. D, 27 Iowa, and was honorably discharged after three years service.

He is survived by his widow and three sons, Henry, John and Julius, all of whom are married and well to do farmers.

His remains were buried at the old cemetery on Monday, followed by a large procession of relatives and friends. A number of his comrades in arms served as pall bearers, and Rev. Sommerland preached an eloquent sermon at the grave, paying an eloquent tribute to old soldiers that are year by year mustered out of services in this world, and whose graves it would be our duty to decorate with flowers, to keep their memorable service forever fresh in our memories. With the beautiful ceremony of the Lutheran church in which those effecting words appear, "earth to earth, dust to dust, ashes to ashes," he consigned the remains to the grave. May he rest in peace.
