Elkader Register, Thur., 06 Apr. 1905. Garnavillo column.
Mrs. John Kluss, nee Fredericke Mary Elizabeth Duman, was born Jan. 4, 1824, in Lubello, Mecklenburg, Schwerin. Her maiden years were spent in the parental home. In Sept. 1849, she was married to John Kluss. Four years later she and her husband emigrated to this country and took up their abode on a farm in Garnavillo township. Eight children were born to them. After the father's death the family moved to Grand Meadow township, where they remained until the spring of 1887, when they moved to Postville, Ia. Deceased was a sufferer from rheumatism for the last five years and often felt the feebleness of age, which already in itself is gradual death. At times she was only able to enjoy the pleasures of the mind and how sincerely did she long for that place where she will enjoy these without measure. About four weeks ago she was taken sick with the grippe. The careful nursing, which she always received, would prolong her life no longer and on Thursday at 12:20 p.m. she was summoned to the enjoyment of heavenly blessedness. She was a pattern of piety and her children will ever hold her memory dear and think with gratitude of her exemplary life and of her peaceful end. She is survived by four children, August, married to Katherine Koevenig residing at Postville, William to Margaret Rothtaschel at the Prairie du Chien (Wis.) sanitarium, Reka to Henry Heins at Luana, and Sophia at home, also twenty-seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the St. Paul's Lutheran church at Postville at nine o'clock Sunday forenoon, and were conducted by Rev. Bockelman. The remains were then brought to Garnavillo and Rev. Braun continued services in the church in the afternoon at half past three. Burial took place in the family lot in the old cemetery. At the request of the deceased, six of her grandchildren acted as pallbearers. Sympathy to the sorrowing friends.
