From the Thurs., 13 June 1889 issue of “Elkader Weekly Register,” page 1, column 4:

DEATH OF MAURICE FLECK.

Our citizens were greatly astounded on Tuesday upon learning of the death of Maurice Fleck, which occurred that morning at his home in Guttenberg. He was stricken with paralysis Saturday night, and being in poor health failed to rally from the shock.

Deceased was born in Nordhausen, Germany, in 1821, and resided in that country until 1842, when he came to the United States with his father’s family, all locating on a farm in Lewis county, Missouri. Two years later he and his brother, August, embarked in the mercantile business at St. Louis. In 1850 they removed to Guttenberg, Iowa, where they opened a general merchandise store. Their partnership continued until 1876 when August died, and the firm became known as Fleck, Bliedung Co., and it continued that title until a little over a year ago, when Mr. Fleck assumed entire control.

For several years past the business had been failing; about a month ago Mr. Fleck made an assignment for the benefit of his creditors. That he should be forced to the wall weighed heavily upon his mind, and no doubt hastened his demise.

Mr. Fleck never married, but had a host of friends throughout the county who will sincerely mourn his death.

From the Thurs., 16 May 1889 issue of “Elkader Weekly Register,” Our Local Scrap-Bag section, page 5, column 2: ASSIGNED—We are informed that M. Fleck, the veteran merchant at Guttenberg, has made an assignment for the benefit of his creditors. We have not yet learned the amount of his liabilities or assets.

From the Thurs., 23 May 1889 issue of “Elkader Weekly Register,” Guttenberg section, page 8, column 2: The assignment of Maurice Fleck has caused considerable uneasiness, but there are no fears but that all creditors will get their just dues, at least this is hoped for. We understand a number of laboring men have placed their earnings in the hands of this old and popular firm for safe keeping, and if they were obliged to lose that which they have earned by the sweat of their brow there would certainly be great discontent as well as hard feelings. Our hopes are for the best, and that this firm may be able to soon open its doors.

From the Thurs., 23 May 1889 issue of “Elkader Weekly Register,” page 5, column 4: NOTICE OF GENERAL ASSIGNMENT. / NOTICE HEREBY GIVEN, that on the 13th day of May A. D. 1889, Maurice Fleck, Esq/. pf Guttenberg, Clayton county, in the state of Iowa made a general assignment in writing to the undersigned of all his property for the benefit of all his creditors: who are notified to present their claims to him under oath at Dubuque, Iowa, as required by law. / Dated May 16th, 1889. / ALONZO CRAGIN, / Assignee of Maurice Fleck.

From the Thurs., 20 June 1889 issue of “Elkader Weekly Register,” Guttenberg section, page 8, column 2: The Maurice Fleck store is again open and the immense stock of general merchandise is being closed out. Call and secure bargains.
