Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Feb. 1904. Garnavillo column.
It is our sad duty to chronicle the demise of Mrs. Bertha Brum, of Beloit, Wis., until three years ago a resident of Garnavillo.
Bertha Sigg was born here Jan. 28, 1858, and married Feb. 14, 1878, to Otto Brum, who preceded her to the grave about twenty years ago.
Deceased had been a sufferer at times for years and after several recent severe attacks, it was decided an operation would bring relief. Accordingly she entered the hospital Friday, hoping to regain her heath, but the Sunday following, Jan. 24th, found her cold in death, the earthly life which she so coveted being denied her to gain that everlasting life in Paradise.
Besides relatives and friends she leaves two loved and loving children, Elmer and Edna, to mourn her death. To these orphan children, especially, do their friends extend a heartfelt sympathy, pointing them to Him "who doeth all things well," for comfort.
The remains were brought here Tuesday evening and funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at St. Paul's conducted by Rev. W. K. Braun. She was laid to rest in the new cemetery, to which place a large concourse of mourning relatives and friends followed the bier. The floral tributes that were showered upon the casket were very profuse and testified in mute eloquence to the sadness and sorrow that overwhelms her friends at her untimely death.
The following from out of town were present at the funeral: Edna and Elmer Brum, Mrs. August Maurer, and Will Lathrop, of Beloit; Will Brum and family, of Dubuque; and Joe Sigg, of Lincoln, Neb.
