Martha Thornton Wright was born in Yorkshire, England, Mar. 8th, 1821, and died at her home in Volga, Dec. 16th, 1902. Had she lived till the coming March she would have attained the age of eighty-two. In the year 1843 she was married to George Wright and coming to America in 1854 settled on a farm in Sperry twp., Clayton county, Iowa. Twenty-eight years ago they came to Volga in which place they have since resided. In early life Mrs. Wright joined the Church of England, but on coming to America she united with the Methodist church. Her name was first entered as a probationer in the Volga City class, March 6th, 1864, and joined in full connectiion May 14th, 1865. Four children have been born - one son, Thornton, who died at the age of four years, three daughters - Mrs. Sarah Johnson, of Green Co., Iowa; Mrs. Ettie Davidson, of South Dakota, and Mrs. Martha Brust, of South Dakota. The three daughters, a husband and fourteen grandchildren await their call to pass from earth. Last Monday afternoon Mrs. Wright slipped and fell, receiving injuries from which she never recovered. After being carried into the house she chatted pleasantly. Soon however she became unconscious from which state she never rallied. She was a kind and faithful wife and mother. A home of sixty years standing is broken up by the taking of wife and mother. Her presence will be greatly missed from the home. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. F. W. Bretnall. Interment in the Volga cemetery.
