Elkader Register, Thur., 18 Dec. 1902.
At the Sheriff's residence in this place at noon Wednesday, Dec. 17th, 1902, occurred the death of Fred Cook, deputy sheriff of the county and the jailer. Mr. Cook had been in poor health for some time and on Friday last was again taken with an attack of the ulceration of the stomach, resulting in peritonitis, which caused his death.
Mr. Cook was born in Chillicothe, O., March 21st, 1846. At the age of two years he was deprived of his parents. His boyhood days were passed in Ohio and Kentucky, with a sister, and at the age of 10 years came with her to Iowa, settling at Fort Madison, where he received the advantages of a public school education. At the age of 19 years, in 1865, he came to this county settling at Guttenberg, where he served his apprenticeship as a blacksmith. In 1870 he moved to Garnavillo, where he embarked in the work of wagon making and blacksmithing with Fred Harberg, the firm continuing until Mr. Cook moved to Elkader about Jan. 1st, 1894, to take his position as Sheriff. Since serving his term he has been deputy sheriff and jailer and has been a faithful public servant. He was a member of Garnavillo lodges A.F. & A.M. and I.O.O.F., and was Worthy Patron of Charity Chapter O.E.S., of Elkader, and a member of the local Yeoman lodge, and the Garnavillo Turn Verein.
On Oct. 21, 1869, Mr. Cook married Clara S. Cooley, a daughter of A. S. Cooley, one of the pioneers of the county. Mrs. Cook with two sons, Lee F., of Elkader, and Geo. W., of Monona, are left to mourn his death.
During Mr. Cook's long residence at Garnavillo, he became deservedly popular and was a leader in all movements for the advancement of his home town and in matters of charity. Although a man of strong convictions he always endeavored to do what was right. He was a firm friend, a kind and obliging neighbor and an affectionate husband and parent. By his demise the public has lost a faithful servant and the community a good citizen. He will be mourned and missed by a host of friends throughout the entire county.
The funeral will be held at 9:30 Sunday morning. A short service will be held at his late residence and then the deceased will be taken to Garnavillo for interment under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity.
