Elkader Register, Thur., 11 Sept. 1902. Elkport and Vicinity column.
Friday night, Sept. 5th, 1902, Peter Flaherty, aged 53 years, 7 months and ten days, passed away. He was born in Portland, Maine, Jan. 25, 1849. Although not unexpected, the news that Peter Flaherty was dead created profound sorrow among our people. For the past forty years he has been a resident of Elkport and has been one of its prominent men, closely identified with its growth and doings. He was well known all over Clayton county as an honorable, upright man, and especially good to the poor folks and in his death the poor has lost a friend indeed, one in whom they could trust and who would extend a helping hand in time of need. In his business affairs he was the soul of honor. To his wife and family and also to his aged mother who survives him, our people extend their heartfelt sympathy. Knowing that in the departed they have lost a kind, faithful and loving husband, father and son, the only consolation for the bereaved family is, that in a short time we must all go.
The funeral took place Monday and was very largely attended, showing the high esteem in which the departed was held. Father Minogue, assisted by Father Peickert, of Dubuque, and Father Eardley, of Volga, officiated. Father Eardley preached a very fine sermon in which he feelingly referred to the life of our departed friend. May he rest in peace.
