Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Apr. 1902. Guttenberg column.
On Tuesday, March 25, 1902, at 12:15 p.m., at St. Raphael's Hospital at St. Cloud, Minn., occurred the death of Humbolt Schroeder, son of James Schroeder and wife of this city. The deceased was born in this city on January 1, 1869, and grew to manhood here. He received his education in the Guttenberg Public schools. At the age of sixteen years he edited the Guttenberg Gazette and continued in that position until he left for St. Paul Minn., in 1887, where he secured a position with Scheffer & Rossum, for whom he was clerk and bookkeeper eleven years. In January 1898 he accepted the position as traveling salesman for Schulze Bros., of Duluth, Minn., his territory being northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. In the fall of 1901 he was married to Louise Schulz, of St. Paul, Minn. He leaves a wife, one son and three daughters, besides his parents, several brothers and sisters and a large concourse of friends to mourn his untimely death. He was a member of Court Duluth, No. 724, I.O.F., and of Zenith No. 40 United Commercial Travelers. He had not been feeling well for some time and Sunday, March 1_ (looks like 16 or 18), he entered St. Raphael's Hospital at St. Cloud, Minn., for treatment. Typhoid fever and brain fever was the cause of his death. His remains were brought to this city, accompanied by his mother, wife and children, for interment, John W. Wolter accompanied the remains as far as St. Paul. Mr. Schroeder, when a young man, taught one year of school and clerked in the post office for his father. He was a man of noble traits and held the esteem of everyone who had the honor of his acquaintance. The funeral was held on Saturday last, from the home of his parents, with interment in the city cemetery. D. D. Murphy, of Elkader, made the funeral address and paid a glowing tribune to the character of the deceased. The Press joins with the many friends of the deceased in extending sympathy to those who are left to mourn the loss of a dutiful son and brother and a loving husband and kind father.
