Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Apr. 1902. Volga column.

Grandpa Baars died Thursday, April 3rd, at the home of his son Henry about three miles north of Volga, after a short illness of about three week. Mr. Baars was born in Germany Feb. 1817, and emigrated to this county in 1869 and has been a resident here since. About five years ago he lost his wife for whom he constantly mourned. The deceased leaves one son Henry, on the old homestead: five daughters, Mrs. Henry Kottmann, of Elkader: Mrs. Seibertz, of St. Paul; Mrs. Aug. Samp, of Spencer, S.D., and Mrs. Reick and sister, of Wycoff, Minn. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the home to the Volga cemetery, conducted by Rev. Braun, of Farmersburg.

(Note: WPA records indicate Fred'k Baars, 1817 - 03 Apr. 1902, buried in Hillcrest cemetery.)
