Elkader Register, Thur., 23 Oct. 1879.
Our community was greatly shocked, yesterday afternoon, at receiving the sad news of the death of Max Mentzel, Treasurer Kellner's deputy. For some time past, Max has not been in good health, and on Tuesday placed himself under medical treatment, but he grew steadily worse, so much, that on yesterday he was unable to walk from the treasurer's office, (where he slept) to the hotel. Later, however, he felt somewhat better, and rode down to the hotel with Dr. Purdy. About five minutes to 3 o'clock, Mr. Schroeder left him lying on the floor gasping for breath, and before medical assistance could arrive, he was dead.
Max Wentzel was born at Dresden, Saxony, and was 47 years of age. In 1856 he moved to the United States, and settled in Cox Creek township. He was married and had one son; but his wife and child died about 15 years ago. During Mr. Vaupel's last term as county treasurer, he engaged Max as his deputy and since that time he has served as deputy treasurer. He was an efficient officer, very attentive to his duties, and honest in all his dealings. His quiet, gentlemanly manners won for him the respect of all with whom he had dealings, and all mourn his death as that of another good man gone to his final rest.
The funeral will occur tomorrow, (Friday), at one o'clock p.m. The remains will be buried in the Elkader cemetery. Friends are respectfully invited to attend.
