Mark Bachelor Sherman was born Feb. 7th, 1816, in Walpole, New Hampshire. He was the seventh child of nine children, all of whom grew to maturity. The only survivor is his youngest sister, Mrs. Maria Musson. His father removed to the state of New York when he was but six years old; there he spent his youth and early manhood. At sixteen years of age he began his trade, doing the work of a man from that time on. His life was a toilsome one, he never left the hard places for someone else to take. He believed in following the Golden Rule, and it was his ambition to lead a pure, straight-forward, honest life, to love justice, and honor true merit wherever found, to injure no man, to advance the public good without seeking positions of prominence for himself. In 1843 he with his young wife removed from New York to what was then the outposts of frontier life; he spent a year and a half in Prairie du Chien and in May, 1845, came to make his home in the township of Farmersburg. There he was one of the earliest settlers and for several years has been the oldest living settler in the township. Some weeks ago he fell and broke his thigh bone, and suffered intense pain till death came to his release on Thursday, Aug. 5th. His remains were placed in the cemetery at National on Sunday, Aug. 9th.
In his death his family mourn a kind husband and father and his friends a true friend.
