H.B. Carter

H.B. Carter, formerly of Elkader and a resident of this county from about 1847 to 1885, died at Los Angeles, California, April 22nd, 1896. He was attacked with apoplexy while on the train near Los Angeles on the 18th, and removed to the Sisters Hospital where he died. He was on a journey from his home at Ashland, Oregon, to Houston, Texas, where he was to meet his wife and expected, with her to visit friends here during the springtime.

H.B. Carter was well known to the people of Elkader and vicinity, having spent most of his life among them, he was here engaged in the mercantile and banking business and during the years of his active life was constantly dealing with this people; he was a careful prudent business man, an exemplary citizen, a kind husband and father.

His was a high order of intellectual ability and attainment - an almost perfect self poise; he was an ardent friend, a lover of the good and beautiful; his literary tastes were excellent and he was a fine descriptive writer.

He was in 1856 elected State Senator by the republicans of this county and rendered faithful service, at that time and for years before and after he was quite active in politics. He was a member of Elkader Lodge No. 304 I.O.O.F. and so remained during his residence here and was a worthy brother.

He was comprehensive, broad and liberal in his views, an earnest seeker after truth and of that strong mental caliber that made him careful of the opinions and feelings of others.

He leaves a wife and five children; Frank H., Ernest V., Ray, Mrs. Carter and Ellen M. Galey [all] reside at Ashland, Oregon; and Orra A. Purdy at Houston, Texas.

H.B. Carter was born in Summit Co., Ohio, September 1st, 1825, he had passed his three score years and ten and while his death was sudden and unexpected, can we say that it was untimely? "The days of our years are three score years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be four score years, yet it their strength labor and sorrow, for it is soon cut off and we fly away."
~Elkader Argus, Thursday, April 30, 1896
