Elkader Register, Thur., 26 June 1879.
On Friday afternoon of last week, Mr. George Vandyke, of Grand Meadow township, met with an accident that resulted in his death. He was at work in the field, haying, with two or three others, when he engaged in a playful scuffle with a man from Hardin, named Tuller. They both fell to the ground in the struggle, Mr. Vandyke falling in such a manner as to violently wrench his neck, causing complete paralysis of his body below the seat of injury. He stated that his injuries were fatal and so it proved. He was conveyed to the house at once, and a physician called, but all the doctor could do was unavailing, his injuries proved fatal within 12 hours. Mr. Vandyke was an old resident of that township, being one of the early settlers, and was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He was in his 49th years and leaves a wife and five grown children.
