The community was shocked early Saturday morning when a message came from Mason City, announcing that Charley Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson, of this place, and a well known railway official of the Milwaukee road. had met with a severe accident. His sister, Carrie, departed on the nine o'clock train to his bedside, but as other messages received during the day indicated the injuries were not as serious as at first thought, the family and friends were much encouraged, however, the encouragement was of short duration, for at four o'clock Sunday morning the sad message came that Charley had passed away.
Charles Augustus was the youngest child of John and Mary Anderson. His life began near Monona, January 29th, 1874, and came to a close on October 31st, 1915, at Mason City, Iowa. For over twenty-five years he was engaged in the railway service of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad and came by his death while in pursuit of his duties. For a number of years his home was in Mason City, but in the change of duties he found it necessary to move his family to Mitchell, S.D., a few years ago, which has since been his home. On Nov. 29th, 1894, he was married to Miss Lulu Green. They have one son, Carl, aged 14 years. The deceased is survived by his wife and son, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson, sister Carrie and brother, J. A. Anderson, who is station agent at Worthington, S.D.
The remains were brought to Monona Sunday night, accompanied by his wife and son, sister and brother. Superintendent B. F. Van Vleet and Div. Passenger and Freight Agent Cody, also accompanied the body here and were unusually considerate of the family's feelings and did everything to comfort the aged parents. The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church, Tuesday afternoon, at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. James B. Bird, and attended by a large circle of neighbors and friends, members of the Masonic order and a large delegation of railway employes, the latter marching in a body beside the mourner's carriages from the house to the church, as special escort.
The burial services were conducted by the Masonic lodge, the deceased being a member of that order at Mason City.
