Elkader Register, Thur., 28 Sept. 1899.
On Friday forenoon, Sept. 22, 1899, Mrs. Katherine Seifert, the beloved wife of Father Seifert, of Clayton Center, passed away after a short but painful illness. She was taken sick on the Sunday previous and the attending physicians at once declared her chances of recovery slight. On Thursday it was thought best to perform a dangerous operation but without avail.
Katherine Ruckdaschel was born Jan. 2, 1847, in Weizenstadt, Bavaria, and came to this country in 1852, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Ruckdaschel, who reside at Postville, as do two brothers, Christ and John. She was married to Rev. F. W. Seifert June 12, 1866, and to the union twelve children were born, two of whom, Ernest and Carl, died when quite young. One daughter is married to Reinhold Seeland, another to Wm. Fuelling, one to Carl Vullgraff, and Sophia to Fred Zahrndt. Besides her parents, her husband and children, three sisters and three brothers survive and mourn her loss together with a large circle of friends in all parts of the county.
The funeral was held on Monday morning and was one of the largest ever scene in Clayton Center, friends from all the neighboring towns being present to pay their respects to the memory of a most worthy woman. Rev. Sommerlad, of Garnavillo, officiated at the church, and Rev. Brockelman, of Postville, at the grave. The Elkader Gesang Verein were present and assisted the church choir. The casket was profusely decorated with flowers, the gifts of sorrowing friends. Our sympathy goes out to the sorrowing family.
