Elkader Register, Thur., 15 June 1899.
In the death of Joachim Franke, which occurred at his home at Littleport, June 6th, we are called upon to note the passing away of one of the old settlers of this vicinity, one who has been identified with Littleport and surroundings for the last 31 years.
Deceased was born August 24th, 1828, at Baartz by Ketz, West Prussia, at which place in 1859 he was married to Maria Eggert. With her in 1865 he came to America, landing in New York, from there he came directly to Communia, this county. At this place they resided for a year and a half, then moved to Littleport and built the home they occupied at the time of his death. Deceased was a stone mason by trade and a man noted for his habits of industry and frugality. Among the many edifices erected by him may be mentioned the Mederville stone flouring mill and the Motor stone mill which stand as monuments attesting his industry and skill as a tradesman. He continued to work at his trade until about ten years ago when he quit the business and devoted his time to the improvement of his farm and the embellishment of his home which is a model for its neatness and convenience. He leaves an aged wife and one daughter, a young lady residing at home, to mourn his death, the surviving daughter being the only one remaining of five children born of this union.
Two years ago last winter he had a severe attack of grippe which left his system in a depleted condition and from which he never fully recovered, yet he managed to perform the lighter labors pertaining to his vocation till last winter a recurrence of the malady again prostrated him. From this attack he gradually grew worse till in the end the dark, stern, pitiless, angel of death viewed triumphantly the fearful ruin he had wrought. His was a life of toil but let us believe that through a kind law of compensation in the light of the great hereater the broken strands of friendship will be united and the family circle be made whole, when pains and sorrows, the burdens and cares of our brief day we passed on earth be remembered as a troubled dream.
The funeral was from the late home of the deceased, the services being conducted by Rev. Fritschel, of Elkport, and the remains laid tenderly to rest in the cemetery at Communia on Thursday last followed by a large concourse of friends and old neighbors. Peace to his ashes.
