Elkader Register, Thur., 08 June 1899.
On Friday, June 2nd, 1899, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. J. C. Tipton, at Glencoe, Cook Co., Ill., occurred the death of Charles W. Muzzy. Mr. Muzzy was born at Clarendon, Orange County, N.Y., March 25th, 1824. At an early age he moved with his parents to Chautaqua county, N.Y., where as the eldest son he assisted in opening and grubbing a new farm and assisting his parents. Here he married Miss Sarah Kennedy and then came west settling at Zanesville, Wis. About 1851 he came to Elkader and with him came three sisters and a brother. These, Mrs. Stephen Enright, Adeline Bowers, Mary Fowler and Wm. H. Muzzy, he assisted in their educational work and all were at one time teachers here, having taught in the brick school house on the east side. We believe only Mrs. Enright and W. H. Muzzy survive. Mrs. Muzzy died in 1863 and on March 18th, 1868, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Milo Adams, who died March 2nd, 1897. After the death of his wife Mr. Muzzy's home was broken up and for a time he lived at R. E. Price's for whom he had worked for over twenty years. Last fall the deceased went to Glencoe to reside with his daughter where he died as stated.
Mr. Muzzy was a resident of this place for forty-four years and was honored and respected by all. He endeavored to do right by all men and was known for his honesty of purpose. He aided his brother and sisters and others dependent upon his wife and himself. His great love for children and their affection for him illustrates the kind of a man he was. His memory will be kept green in the hearts of many, and all will deeply regret his departure.
Deceased is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. C. Tipton, of Glencoe Ill., and one son, Charles, of Council, Okla.
The remains of Mr. Muzzy were brought to this place by Mrs. Tipton on Saturday last and on Sunday afternoon the funeral services were held at the residence of R. E. Price. Rev. Mr. Wing conducted the service assisted by Rev. A. B. Fickle, the interment being in East Side cemetery. Messrs. John Becker, M. Bachtell, Chas. Ruegnitz, A. Kramer, H. D. Brown and J. E. Webb served as pall bearers. The large attendance testified to the esteem held for the departed by our people.
