Elkader Register, Thur., 13 Apr. 1899. Clayton column.

The remains of our old pioneer citizen, John Hauschen, Sr., arrived here Saturday morning from Guttenberg where he has resided for a few years and where he died last Thursday after an illness of about three months. The funeral services were held at the home of his son, John Hauschen, Jr., of this place, Rev. Sommerlad, of Garnavillo, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Clayton cemetery beside those of his wife and three children who preceded him to the grave many years ago. He leaves a wife and three sons to mourn his loss. Peace to his ashes. We are without further particulars as to his immigration to this country and his settlement in this county.

Note: Gravestone in the Clayton cemetery spells his surname as HAEUSCHEN
