J. C. Schmalfeld.

(Was born,) April 10, 1861, in Farmersburg township, on the old Schmalfeld homestead. He was the youngest of five children in the family. Two brothers and two sisters passed away with diphtheria the same year that he was born. He was baptized and confirmed by pastor Seifert of the Clayton Center congregation. Later in his life he was also affiliated with the Clayton Center congregation as a member.

Nov. 25, 1887, he married Eliza Maria Henning. This union was blessed with three children, two sons and a daughter. The daughter, Elta, died in infancy at the age of three. An adopted daughter, Alice, took her place in the home. In December, 1925, his wife died, leaving the husband to the (several words blurred) at the old home place now occupied by his son, Arno. On Friday, Oct. 11, he passed away at the age of 68 years, five months and one day. Shortly before his death, Oct. 1, he expressed a desire to visit his daughter, Mrs. Frederick Lendt, at Sleepy Eye, Minn. With his other children, he spent a week there, and then was anxious to return to his home again. Up to the very end he did not complain of sickness or pain.

He is survived by two sons, Arno, married to Mahala Breitsprecher, and Elmer, married to Zelda Rayment, and the daughter, Alice, Mrs. Lendt; ten grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Throughout his life he was a successful and industrious farmer, spending his whole life in Farmersburg township on the old Schmalfeld homestead. May he be at rest is the hope of all his friends and children.
