Obituary

Leila Hefel, age 72, of Holy Cross, IA, died Thursday, December 3, 2020, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Leila was born on November 10, 1948 in rural Osterdock, one of seven children to Andy and Delpha (Decker) Moser.

On April 20, 1968, Leila was united in marriage with the love of her life Lester Hefel at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Buena Vista and this union blessed the couple with four children.

Leila was an icon in the community. Her house was open to everyone and she was ready to welcome and feed anyone. She went out of her way to make her home feel like a home to all. These are just a few of the reasons why she was known as “Mom” to so many.

Leila was always ready to play. She loved taking the grandchildren on 6-wheeler rides across the water breaks, playing ‘Life on the Farm’, and cracking “unfiltered” jokes. Leila and the grandchildren spent much of their time searching for cow #8. All of her grandchildren knew that the unofficial house rule at Leila’s was, “what happens at Grandma’s stays at Grandma’s.” This included: unlimited popsicles and ice cream, cookies for breakfast, endless love, laughter, sincerity, and safety.

Leila’s unplanned death has rocked her family. Leila is irreplaceable and will be greatly missed by all who love her.

Left to cherish her memory are her 4 children: Tina Hefel, Donna (Jeff) Brimeyer, Andrew (Shawna) Hefel, and Thomas (Christine) Hefel; grandchildren Sadie and Joseph Abitz; Natalie and Matthew Brimeyer; Daniel Hefel; Jacob Hefel, and Makayla Mihalakis; siblings, Carol (Ed) Schroeder; Penny (Tim) McGuine; Becky (Jose) Cano; Larry (Dorothy) Moser, Lonnie (Rose) Moser; and Lynn (Lorna) Moser.

Leila is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Lester in 2014.
