Clayton County Register, Thur., 10 Oct. 1929.
Ulysses S. Clark, the son of Edward and Martha (Reed) Clark, was born at Colesburg, Iowa, May 2, 1863, and passed away at his home in Elkader, October 2, 1929, being at the time of his death, 66 years and six months of age.
He spent his childhood at Postville where he attended the public schools. In early life he came to Clayton County which was to be his home until his death.
On the 21st of September, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Mitchell, of Elkader. To this union three daughters were born, Mrs. William Kennedy, of Chicago; Mrs. Frank Leonard, of Elkader; and Mrs. Eric Aarvig, of St. Olaf.
Besides the widow and the three daughters, there remain to mourn his loss seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Charles Wilson, of Alhambra, Cal.; one sister, Mrs. Lime Patterson, and a brother, C. Elmer Clark, having preceded him in death.
He was one of the oldest members of the local lodge of Modern Woodmen having been a member for 32 years. His religious affiliation was with the Congregational church, Elkader. He was a deacon of that church at the time of his death.
In the passing of Mr. Clark, a familiar figure will be missed on our streets; the church a faithful deacon and a multitude will mourn the death of a sincere and warm hearted friend.
"Sunset and evening star
and may there be
No moaning at the bar
When I put out to sea.""Twilight and evening bell
and after that the dark
And may there be no sadness and
farewell
When I embark.""For though from out our bourn of
time and place
The tide may bear me far
I hope to meet my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar."
