Clayton County Register, Thur., 19 Sept. 1929.

It has pleased God to call from time into eternity Johann Heinrich Lemke, so we will give in short retrospect the course of his life. He was born on April 20, 1856 here in Read township; and confirmed in the Zion church at Clayton Center on March 26, 1871 by Rev. Seifert.

He was united in marriage with Wilhelmine Lemke, born Radloff, on March 18, 1881. Eleven children were born to this union. God called into eternity two sons and four daughters, the last of them are Emma and Lucy. Since that time the health of the mother was much undermined until her death, which was caused by heart disease, and occurred on May 21, 1918. For thirty-seven years she lived, together with her husband, in great happiness. And now, eleven years later, God likewise took home Johann Heinrich Lemke. He was a (next several words blurred) Evangelical Lutheran Zion church, always peaceable and wishing to be in peace with others. He died on Sunday evening, September 8, in the home of his son, George. His whole lifetime was 73 years, four months and 19 days.

Those remaining to mourn for him are two sons and three daughters and eight grandchildren, also five sisters and one brother. The name of the surviving children are: Wilhelm Lemke, Ella, married to Charley Best; Minna, married to Arthur Klinge; Hilda, married to Arthur Staack; George Lemke, married to Amanda Schmidt.

The funeral was held on Wednesday, September 11, from the home and in the church and was largely attended. His pastor, Rev. Berthold F. K. Korte, officiated. Interment was made in the old cemetery.
