Clayton County Register, Thur., 17 Jan. 1929.
Mrs. Hans Nelson was born November 18, 1858, in Read Twp., Clayton county, Iowa. She was baptized instructed and confirmed in the Norway Lutheran church and has always been a member of this church. She was given in marriage to Hans Nelson April 23, 1877, and to this union were born three children. Nearly two years ago they celebrated their golden wedding. On this festive occasion the Norway congregation gave a dinner in their honor and also gave a gift of gold money. Mrs. Nelson often mentioned the kindness that was shown them on this occasion and with much thankfulness to all. She was also thankful to her associates for all the kindness shown her throughout life. A few days before her death she sent word to the society she had labored with, thanking the members for their kindness.
It was her wish that she should not be flattered nor given any credit. What she was, of any worth, she was in Christ Jesus and she desired that God should have the praise. The way of salvation in Christ Jesus, through grace, was her only foundation and hope of salvation. She keenly felt her own unworthiness to stand before the righteous Judge. Still, she went forth with boldness in the righteousness of Christ accounted to her through faith in Him. Some of her confessions to her family and friends will be interesting: '
"Whatever you do don't doubt the Salvation in Christ Jesus; don't go backward, go forward; if God can forgive one sin, He can forgive all sin and all sinners; be brave and go forth."Mrs. Nelson had for many years suffered with the disease from which she died. It is thought that it was cancer of the stomach. She died Tuesday morning, January 8, at her home in St. Olaf. Her age was 70 years, one month and 21 days.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, Hans Nelson; her daughter, Mae, and son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Nelson with their family of five children, Dorothy, Clifford, Arleen, Layton and Lela all of St. Olaf. Also one brother, Gilbert Halverson of St. Olaf, and two sisters, Mrs. Christina Everson and Mrs. Andrew Larson, together with many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the home and at the Norway Lutheran church two miles west of St. Olaf, on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 10. Interment was made in Norway cemetery, Rev. T. W. Tysdal officiating.- Contributed.
