E. C. Ehrhardt, prominent citizen of the community, passed away at his home here at Elkader at 6:30 o'clock a.m. on Tuesday morning, June 30th. Several weeks ago Mr. Ehrhardt injured his leg; infection set in and this together with other complications caused his sudden death. He had reached the age of 68 years, 4 months and 4 days. Few people knew that he had been ill as on Sunday he was uptown in his usual good spirits.

Edward Charles Ehrhardt was born at Elmira, New York, on the 28th day of February, 1857, a son of John and Henrietta (Kaiser) Ehrhardt. He came to Clayton County with his parents when a small boy of about two years of age. He assisted with the work on the father's farm and the educational advantages of his youth were those afforded in the pioneer schools of Boardman township.

On the 5th day of June, 1884, he was united in marriage with Elizebeth Sophia Brockman, of Farmersburg township. This union was blessed with six children, George C., Carl R., Fred J., Edward H, Elmer H., one child, a daughter, died in infancy.

Mr. Ehrhardt with his family lived on the farm two miles west of Elkader till the spring of 1918, when they decided to leave the farm and move to Elkader to enjoy their remaining years and enjoy the fruits of their labors. The following year on April 28th, 1919, his faithful wife and companion was called from his side. Since then Mr. Ehrhardt has made his home with his son, Edward and family at the family residence.

Mr. Ehrhardt was at the time of his death president of the Farmers Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Association of Communia, for several years he was township assessor of Boardman township and for about thirty years was a member of the board of trustees of this township, being at the time of his death chairman of that board. He was very active in county politics as one of the leading members of the Democratic party. This interest in public affairs continued till his death.

Mr. Ehrhardt is survived by five sons, George at Communia; Carl on the home farm; Fred at Sac City, Iowa; Edward here at Elkader; Elmer of Boardman township. He also leaves his aged father-in-law, Christian Brockman, six grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters, George and Ehrhardt and Mrs. Jos. J. Kuehl, of Elkader, and Mrs. (looks like Lea Mayville), of Volga City; many other relatives and friends who mourn his sudden passing.

Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon, 1:30 at the house and at 2:00 o'clock at the Evangelical church, Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Mystic Camp, No. 319, Modern Woodman of America, of which organization Mr. Ehrhardt had been a member for many years had charge of the services at the cemetery. He was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the East Side cemetery, there to await the call of his Master.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the family in their sorrow.
