Elkader Register, 21 May 1925.

Last Saturday, May 16th, at the family home in St. Olaf, Wm. Knuth passed away after suffering from cancer for some time.

Mr. William Christian Knuth was born Oct. 1, 1865, in Germany. When 7 years of age, he left Germany together with his parents who came to Chicago where they lived for several years. From Chicago the family moved to Clayton county where they have resided since.

He was united in marriage with Anna Mandelkow in the year 1891. To them have been born eight children, two of which have died; Ruby 2 years and Pearl 14 years of age.

Those left to mourn his loss are: his wife, Mrs. Anna Knuth of St. Olaf, three sons: Arthur and William of St. Olaf, Edmund of McGregor. Three daughters, Mrs. A. Kirscht of St. Olaf, Mrs. J. Steen of Elkader, and Mrs. N. Nieland of Guttenberg. He left also two brothers and one sister: Herman of Luana, Emil of Austin, Minn., and Mrs. Ida Gottschalk of Littleport, Iowa. All of the above were at the funeral.

All of the places of business in St. Olaf were closed for an hour while services were held in the St. Olaf Chapel for the deceased.

The cause of his death was cancer. Slowly this enemy of man broke down his health and did its final work in causing his death on Saturday 16th of May.

Many of the people in Clayton County will remember Mr. Knuth by the buildings he has erected.
