Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 22 Oct. 1897.
Thomas Cassiday.
Monday morning the many friends of Thomas Cassiday, of this township, were startled with the news that he was seriously ill with congestion of the brain and not expected to live. This intelligence proved too true and he sank to rest Monday evening, Oct. 18th, 1897. He had been at church the previous day. Deceased was born in the county West Maith, Ireland, and was about 65 years of age. He came to this country in 1865 and for over thirty years he has been a resident of this county. He leaves a wife and two sons with other relatives to mourn his sudden departure.
The funeral was held Wednesday morning from St. Joseph's church and the fact that the procession consisted of over eighty teams, attested to the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held by his neighbors. A worthy mam has gone from among us. May he rest in peace.
(Note: WPA records indicate Thomas Cassidy, 1832 - 1897, buried in St. Joseph's cemetery.)
