Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 23 July 1897. Clayton column.

Thus another of the long list of old settlers that has answered the last roll call and prepared herself for that long journey across the dark valley of death, and the spirit of Mrs. John Lossing, quietly took flight Tuesday July 13, bringing eternal rest to a long sufferer of asthma and Dropsy. Henrietta Phillipson Lossing was born at Ancaster, Ontario, Oct. 13th, 1836, moved with her parents to Delhi, Ontario, when three years old, at which place she was educated and confirmed in the church of England, and resided with her parents until 1866, in which year she was married to John Lossing on June 1st at Milwaukee, Wis. Coming direct to Clayton, Iowa, where she has since resided with her husband. One child, a son, was the fruit of this union, who preceded his mother to the grave Aug. 10th, 1884. Since leaving her Canadian home she has joined the M.E. church at this place under Rev. Gammon, to which she was a devout member. Being a thorough Christian woman she was fully prepared to meet her maker. As a kind and sympathetic neighbor, a loving and faithful wife she will ever be kept in sacred memory. Her husband in his old age will only be temporarily alone as she has gone to make a place beside her just within the gates ajar where she waits his coming to that eternal rest. The funeral was conducted by Rev. H. Beeler and the remains deposited in the Clayton cemetery followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. May her slumbers be unbroken.
