Elkader Register, Fri. morning, 29 Jan. 1897. Local Scrap Bag column.
A sad case of suicide occurred in Waner twp., on Thursday, Jan. 21st. Paul Neubauer, a young man aged 24 years, was left at home on Wednesday while his parents went to town. On their return Paul was missing. Thinking that he had gone to the neighbors nothing was thought strange. Next day the young man's body was found in a grove near the school house with a bullet hole in the head. It would seem that he had contemplated the school children finding him. After a thorough investigation by Coroner Scholz and a jury composed of C. H. Klingman, Ed. Henkes and J. L. Wagner, a verdict of suicide was rendered.
