Mrs. George Hulbert (Obituary)

Mrs. Bertha Hulbert died at her home here on October first [1940] at the age of 74 years, one month and nine days.

The deceased, the daughter of Frederick and Frederika Alitz, was born in Germany on August 22, 1866, and came to America with her parents when she was two years of age to settle at Clayton Center.

March 3, 1886 she was united in marriage with George Hulbert at Clayton Center. Nine children were born to this union. One son, George preceded his mother in death in the year 1919.

The eight surviving children are: Alvah, at home; Benjamin at Postville; Esther (Mrs. Vance Macha) of New Hampton; Glen at Arlington; Vern at Farmersburg; Verni at Elkader; Curley at home and Jessie (Mrs. Vallie Behrens) of Elkader.

The deceased spent her entire life in this country, residing a number of years at Clayton Center, Guttenberg, Garnavillo and for a number of years on the farm. The last 15 years of her life she had lived here in Elkader.

Mrs. Hulbert had been in failing health for a number of years and though her family knew that death was near they did not expect the end so suddenly.

Besides the above-mentioned children she is survived by her husband, two sisters: Mrs. Sam Boots and Mrs. Fred Leonard, both of Elkader; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One brother, Fred Alitz, preceded her in death here in 1927, and one sister, minnie Grannis at Iroquois, SD, in 1928.

Funeral services were held at the home last Thursday afternoon at 1:30 and at the Frieden's Evangelical church at 2:00. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.

Casket bearers were: Floyd and Harry Macha, Doyle and Glen, Jr., Hulbert, Verdall Hulbert and Harlin Kuhse.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr and Mrs Dick Bugraff, and Mrs. Otto Hartman of Mason City; Mrs. Arthur Butler, Sr., and son, and Mrs. Oliver Alitz of Oelwein, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Macha and Mrs. Vlad Macha of Mable, Minn.

Card of Thanks:
