Elkader Register, Thur., 31 May 1900. Garnavillo column.
Margaret Walter, nee Ficken, was born Sept. 14, 1869, in Garnavillo twp. The greater part of her youth was spent in our neighborhood. A few years after the death of her father they moved to Cresco where the deceased spent some years enjoying country life. On Sept. 13, 1897, she was joined in matrimony to Andrew Walter of this place, but their life's journey saw many hours clouded with sadness owing to the long severe sufferings of the deceased, who spent many weeks of the past two years in the hospital at Iowa City. Two operations were performed on her, one the 6th of April, 1899, and the other the past spring. After the latter she gradually grew weaker from day to day till bearing her trials as patiently as before and always living in hopes that some day her health would be restored. But these hopes finally proved to be in vain and on Sunday morning, May 20, 1900, death claimed his victim.
The deceased enjoyed a wide spread acquaintance and all regarded her as a true and loving friend. She leaves a devoted husband, a mother, stepfather, a sister, a brother, and four stepbrothers and sisters besides many friends to mourn her loss, but all are comforted with the assurance that although everything in their power was done for her during her illness and at her burial, she is better taken care of now and lives with those where suffering is unknown.
