Elkader Register, Thur., 11 Jan. 1900. From the Guttenberg Press undated.
Mrs. Jane Miller, wife of C. D. Miller, died at her home in Mallory township, January 5th, 1900, at 5:28 a.m. She was born July 26, 1839, at Cincinnati, Ohio. Her father was of an old Pennsylvania family of McGuires, and her mother, whose maiden name was Sumner, was a first cousin of Charles Sumner the renowned statesman and orator. She was married to C. D. Miller in Pike county, Ill., May 26th, 1858, and as a result of this union fourteen children were born six of whom are dead. In March of the year following her marriage, in company with her husband and youngest brother, moved to Franklin county, Kansas. At that time the inhabitants of Kansas were principally Indians, coyotes and buffaloes. The family left there in October, 1859, and went to Huntingdon, Pa. Here they remained till March, 1862, when they came to Clayton county, Iowa. In September 1865 the then small family moved to Coatsburg, Adams county, Ill., where they remained till April 1867, when they returned to Clayton county, Iowa, and settled on the farm now the present homestead. Of the family living besides the husband and father there are eight children, as follows; Sumner of this place; Dr. W. A., of Elkader; Mrs. A. L. Sawyer, of Greeley; Edward and Florence attending school at the Upper Iowa University; and Tillie, Frank and Grover at home. Mrs. Miller was a mother in all that endeared term implies. Being herself denied the priviledge of attending school after she was fourteen years of age, she felt the necessity of higher education, and it was one of her ambitions to have her children educated. She even deprived herself of many luxuries to accomplish this purpose. She was interred Sunday, January 7th, at the Brown cemetery near Colesburg in the same lot with two sons and two daughters that have preceded her to the Great Beyond. From the trials and hardships she has undergone it does appear that if Heaven has any rewards for merit, she should certainly reap a bountiful harvest. - Guttenberg Press.
