Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Jan. 1900. Strawberry Point columns.
The death of Elmer Ben Davis occurred at the home of Frank Richardson and wife last Saturday evening. Deceased was born in Strawberry Point and has lived in this vicinity all his life. His father, Daniel T. Davis, died Aug. 16th, 1883. After his death his mother was united in marriage to Frank Connor, of this place, Nov. 28th, 1888. Her death occurred July 23rd, 1894. Since his mother's death he has made his home mostly with Frank Richardson and wife. Like other boys he was fond of playing ball and while engaged in a game he bruised his leg. In course of time it was pronounced consumption of the bone. He was taken to Chicago where his relatives thought he could secure help, but the doctors found it necessary to unjoint the leg at the hip. Since his return home he seemed to be doing nicely until a short time ago, when the disease went to his spine then to his brain which was known as consumption of the brain and this disease shortened his days. Both his father and mother died with that lingering disease, consumption. He was a young man and gained friends everywhere he went. He attended the public school here for a number of years and gained the respect of all his class mates. His form is no longer with us but his influence is and will always remain in the minds of those who knew him. We mingle our tears with those who mourn the loss of a dear one, through those tears we look up for Heaven is near, the attraction upward being strengthened by each one who passed on before. He suffered no pain through his sickness and died as one in a sleep. Besides two half-brothers, the relatives, he leaves a number of friends to mourn his death. The funeral services were held Monday at the home of Frank Richardson and was conducted by Rev. Bean. The remains were laid to rest beside those of his father and mother in this cemetery.
"I see by faith's clear vision,
The boy that we loved so dear,
Blooming in fadeless beauty
In Heaven's own warmth and cheer."
