Elkader Register, Thur., 07 Dec. 1922. Volga column.

Lewis M_tt Goodwin who departed this life on the morning of Nov. 30 was the youngest child of Jonathan and Caroline Goodwin and was born in Grand Isle, Vermont, July 3, 1849, and was 73 years, 4 months and 27 days old at the time of his passing. His parents came to Iowa when he was but four years of age and settled on a farm near Volga where he grew to manhood. He was the last of a family of seven children who with his parents all preceded him to the better land and are now rejoicing at his coming, thus making their family circle complete. Nov. 26, 1876, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Libby of Volga, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Charles Cressey, pastor in the M.E. church. They began their married life in a new home built for them on the old Goodwin farm, where they lived until after the death of his parents when they moved to Volga, where, in the near, they have resided ever since. Lew and Anna were identified with the Methodist church both members of the choir, he for a time being chorister and of which she is still a member and leader. Although Mr. Goodwin was in failing health for some time, he was only confined to his bed for two weeks. He was at times a great sufferer, yet bore it with fortitude and patience. During this time he was tenderly cared for by his nearly heart-broken wife and his niece Mrs. Orpha Boyer who so lovingly attended him to the end. Everything that kind and sympathizing neighbors and friends could do was done to assist in lightening the burdens of the sorrowing ones. Lew was a kind and honest man ever ready to do a friendly turn more ready to receive an injury than do one, a man to be depended upon. He was a kind and devoted husband, ever regarding the interests of his wife above his own and she is now left to struggle on alone. Three nephews, Ernest R. Goodwin, of Volga, Louis Earl Goodwin of Jasonville, Indiana, and Lewis Goodwin of Kansas, and a number of nieces who all loved uncle Lew and will miss him and his cheery greetings. Mr. Goodwin led a clean pure life. He left the assurance that it was all well with him and he was ready to go. A good man has fallen. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. A. Crumb in the Methodist church Friday afternoon Dec. 1, 1922. The floral offerings were beautiful. Interment in Hillcrest cemetery.
