Elkader Register, Thur., 30 Nov. 1922.
William Funk, a young man 23 years of age employed by H. A. Wirkler on his farm one mile north of National, was accidentally killed Monday afternoon when a tractor he was operating backed off the corn crib driveway and falling on the unfortunate young man pinned him beneath the steering wheel.
Mr. Wirkler had been grinding feed and left William to finish up the job while he went to Farmersburg on business.
It seems that William wanted to tighten the belt and in doing so had to put the tractor in reverse and being unable to stop the machine it plunged off the corncrib driveway, a depth of about seven feet, turning over backwards and crushed him beneath the wheel.
William Funk was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Funk of Clayton Center and was an honest and industrious young man. He is survived by his parents, five sisters and three brothers.
The funeral of the unfortunate young man will be held today, Thanksgiving Day, at 10:00 o'clock at the home of his parents, then to the Zions Lutheran Church at Clayton Center, when the body will be laid to rest in the family lot. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Wm. Wuestenberg.
Our sympathy goes out to the sorrowing family.
