Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Aug. 1922. Marquette column.
Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Campbell and daughter, Thalia, with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Ferris motored to Monona Tuesday to attend the funeral of David Hall. During the funeral services, William Smith, the only son of John Smith, a farmer living near Monona, was drowned in Wellman's pond. The young man was learning to swim and sank in seven feet of water. Members of the Masonic Fraternity, who were outside the home waiting to pay their respects to the departed member, heard the cry of the young man's companions, and some hurried to the pond where he was quickly taken out and doctors summoned who worked over him for two hours with no response. The boy's parents were at the funeral and the shock was terrible to them.
